Barnsbury Square

Loft extension, London, Islington

This is our third project for these clients who asked Azman Architects to extend and convert the attic in their new apartment into a master bedroom and en-suite bathroom.

The apartment is in the Barnsbury Conservation Area and planning restrictions meant the existing roofline had to be maintained.

With limited usable space and a ceiling height of just 2.1 metres we decided to use a combination of rooflights and to utilise the sloping roof for the new bathroom in order to create generous bedroom.

Space constraints also influenced the decision to use a uniform material - birch faced plywood that also becomes a subtle boundary between existing and new level of the apartment.
