BackLocated on Charlotte Road in the Shoreditch neighbourhood of Hackney, this apartment occupies the top two floors of a once disused warehouse. The building has been extended with an additional floor and is connected by a new timber staircase to the unit below, creating a new residential unit on two floors.
Designed to minimise its visibility from the street, the extension is set back from the edge of the building and slanted from one side. The external envelope of the new floor has been completed with standing-seam zinc panels that complement the traditional mansard roof and blend in with the existing urban background.
This new space contains the home’s living area, which has access to the roof terraces and view towards the City, while the bedrooms are on the lower floor.
The original fabric of this early 20th century warehouse has been retained where possible; the existing brick walls and concrete lintels have been left exposed and are complemented by new clean materials.
